Interview Highlights
BenefitHub has been transforming employee perks and benefits for over two decades. Can you take us back to the beginning—what inspired the inception of the company, and what gap did you aim to fill in the market?
BenefitHub was founded in 1999 with a simple yet powerful mission: to democratize employee perks by providing employees at companies of all sizes with the same quality benefits typically enjoyed exclusively by Fortune 500 workers. We recognized a significant gap in the market—smaller companies lacked access to the comprehensive discount perks offered by larger corporations, and existing benefits were often managed offline by already overwhelmed HR teams.
As a pioneer in the digital benefits space, BenefitHub created the first global online employee perks platform, strategically embracing the emerging Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. By combining cloud capabilities with a scalable multi-tenant platform, we developed a virtual discount marketplace that brought employee benefits into the digital age.
Over the past two decades, we've expanded our vision beyond core medical benefits to address employees' broader lifestyle needs. Today, BenefitHub stands as the world's largest employee lifestyle benefits and discount platform, serving over 17,000 employers—including 36% of the Fortune 500 companies—across 22 countries. Our extensive merchant network offers thousands of deals, and our highly customizable platform seamlessly integrates with existing benefits solutions to deliver valuable local and national discounts that provide tangible savings on everyday purchases.
Throughout our 25+ year journey, we've maintained our position as the original market innovator by continuously evolving our technology-driven platform that emphasizes personalization and accessibility, helping employees stretch their dollars further while providing essential support to HR teams.
BenefitHub is described as a global leader in delivering benefits that employees really want. What’s the secret sauce behind your ability to continuously engage and delight employees?
As an organization, we adopt a mentality of continuous innovation and improvement across every facet of our business. We are continuously enhancing our mobile capabilities and improving our platform’s accessibility to ensure employees can easily access their benefits on the go. Our goal is to deliver value through our scalable platform, wherever you work, live, and play. Regular client feedback helps us capture market needs, enabling agile development strategies that set the pace in a market challenged by value differentiation.
A few examples of elements that set us apart and deliver meaningful value differentiation include:
Your solutions range from discounts to voluntary benefits, rewards, and recognition. How do these elements work together to create a holistic employee engagement experience?
To deliver on our mission of improving the daily lives of employees, we must go beyond any single offering. Providing financial security is just one element of a successful employee value proposition—company culture and positive reinforcement are also vital to employee satisfaction. After all:
At BenefitHub, we offer a wide array of lifestyle benefits that encourage a focus on mental health, physical health, and overall work-life balance. By providing these benefits to their employees, our clients demonstrate their dedication to their workforce.
Employee happiness is key to productivity. Have you seen any tangible ROI or business impact in companies that implement BenefitHub?
Absolutely, with market-leading participation rates as high as 70%, our clients are elated with the platform, with one multinational telecommunications client, recently stating, “BenefitHub has been a key partner in retaining and engaging our employees.” Organizations with comprehensive benefits strategies typically have seen an average productivity increase of 13% and a retention improvement of 40%. This is driven by the value of the program to employees – in 2024 alone we saved members over $75MM! Our Auto and Home quoting functionality was used regularly by employees with average savings of $970 and $573, respectively, on their policies.
Separately, our non-employer clients including membership organizations, loyalty programs and the affinity groups, are seeing consistent ROI from the program, as it helps them to engage their members through offering discounts and perks on everyday purchases through our platform. One of our partners who offers this as a loyalty solution has seen monthly engagement rates of over 30%.
Remote and hybrid work models are reshaping how companies engage employees. How is BenefitHub evolving to meet the needs of the modern, globally distributed workforce?
Our solution was created to meet the needs of an increasingly dispersed workforce, and the online and mobile nature of the BenefitHub platform makes it an easy one-stop shop accessible anywhere— at the office, on the go, or at home. We believe delivering value where employees work, live, and play is essential at all times and precisely when it is needed.
We truly think globally and act locally. We support hundreds of global organizations, and they choose us because serving a global workforce requires a global mindset and strategic investments. Over the past few years, we have refactored our platform to address these challenges. Today, we deliver our platform in over eight languages, offer localized deals in more than 22 markets, and seamlessly provide both a local and global solution, underpinned by our HITRUST and SOC 2 accreditations.
We recognize the importance of having local representation. As such, we have dedicated teams in local markets that oversee clients, manage merchant partnerships, facilitate asset localization, and deliver customized services.
One client shared, “Our employees love BenefitHub because they can save money and access the platform on their mobile devices, allowing them to take full advantage of the discounts and offers even when they are not in the office.”
Looking ahead, what trends do you see shaping the future of employee benefits and rewards? How is BenefitHub staying ahead of the curve?
One trend in the industry is the broad adoption of Artificial Intelligence. As AI assistants become more sophisticated, employees can simply tell their benefits portal exactly what they want and receive the best offerings for their specific needs.
Another emerging trend is an increasingly diverse workforce. We recognize that the time of a “one-size-fits-all” approach to benefits has long since passed, and we’re moving into a period where the workforce will be more multigenerational than ever, resulting in a more varied set of employee needs—needs that we plan to continue to fulfill. By partnering with sustainable and socially responsible merchants to focus on total rewards and employee well-being, we're better equipped to serve organizations seeking comprehensive benefits packages that support the needs of diverse workforces.
The growing need for voluntary benefits is shaping the future of employee benefits. As the workforce continues to diversify and employees prioritize flexibility and customization in their benefits, voluntary benefits provide companies with a way to offer a more tailored benefits package. These benefits can help attract and retain talent while supporting employees’ individual needs.
Our decision to expand our voluntary benefits suite has helped employees fill gaps in their current benefits offered through their employer. Whether it’s helping employees who have incurred significant rate increases or been non-renewed by their current auto or homeowners' insurance carriers, or those trying to fill the gap with their high-deductible health plan, voluntary benefits are playing a significant role in making employee benefits more affordable.
What’s next for BenefitHub? Are there any upcoming innovations, partnerships, or expansions on the horizon that we should be excited about?
Service excellence, scale, and investment are our top priorities. We’ll continue to see significant growth in new logo acquisitions and client partnerships. Additionally, we are investing aggressively in enhancing the user experience and journey, leveraging the latest tools—from AI to APIs—to extend our leadership as the premier perks and voluntary benefits platform.
We expect to continue acquiring great talent and solutions as we actively evaluate several potential add-ons and merger opportunities. We recently acquired Abenity, a Tennessee-based provider of private perks programs. Together, BenefitHub and Abenity will leverage a combined 45 years of experience to reach more members, provide better deals and offers, and propel the benefits industry into the next generation.
There are several technology initiatives planned over the coming years. These include expanding our mobile application and user experience, increasing AI personalization and insight-driven experiences, and expanding our platform integration framework to allow for deeper, richer content and experiences through an ever-expanding network of partners.
Looking ahead to 2025, we see major opportunities in the Human Capital Management (HCM) space. Our platform seamlessly integrates into traditional enrollment processes, enhancing the benefits experience for brokers and clients alike.
