Canalyst: Clean Data, Fundamental Models

Canalyst: Clean Data, Fundamental Models

With technology improving, believe it or not, investing right is getting harder. In the digital age, equity research technology is a must-have for investors and analysts. Vancouver-based Canalyst provides institutional-quality models on all companies in the Russell 2000 and S&P 500, plus over 700 additional US-listed equities across all sectors and market caps.

Established in 2015, Canalyst provides instant access to the cleanest, richest, best structured fundamental data available today via a database of complete, company-specific forecast models on 4,000+ North American listed securities. Every model is updated for earnings data, restatements, and significant M&A in near real-time. The company has offices in midtown Manhattan and Vancouver, Canada.

Canalyst is the leading independent provider of fundamental models to institutional investors. They enable investors to implement new efficiency tools into their workflow and uncover more, higher-conviction investment opportunities by quickly ramping up and expanding coverage based on the platform's robustness and breadth. Canalyst’s platform library consists of equity models, including the S&P 500, Russell 2000, TSX, and TSX Venture Exchange, in addition to more small- and mid-cap indices. “Canalyst provides investment firms invaluable access to accurate and granular financial data that flexibly incorporates into their analysis in a manner that lowers costs, expands addressable market coverage, and increases speed of execution,” says John Montalbano, Chairman of Canalyst and former CEO of RBC Global Asset Management.

The company secured $20 million in its Series B financing round in January 2020. The round was led by a strategic investor with participation from ScaleUP Ventures and existing investors, including Vanedge Capital. This brings Canalyst's total funding to $28 million, with prior rounds led by Vanedge and several of the company's early clients.

The idea of Canalyst was conceived by a former Fidelity analyst who wanted to create an efficient way to expand coverage and compare a broad universe of companies. Today, the firm serves many of the world's largest asset managers. The company got its start as a proprietary tool, which became more competitive and soon sparked interest from other institutional investors on Wall Street. They trust Canalyst's data accuracy, breadth and adaptability to enrich and streamline their research workflow. “We exist to deliver a robust research platform that helps investors exceed their clients' expectations. Canalyst clients are better able to adapt to the increasingly severe pressures they face in their businesses,”says Damir Hot, CEO of Canalyst. In a sense, Canalyst was created by investors, for investors

The company has a 60+ person equity research team that builds and updates models directly from company filings, using a stringent review process to ensure accuracy. At the end of January this year, the company signed its 200th firm.
