IMEXHS — Leading the digital transformation of the medical imaging industry

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has touched almost all aspects of human lives. The healthcare industry has also benefited a lot from AI. It helps healthcare professionals understand people’s needs and thus provide better feedback, guidance, and support for healthy living. IMEXHS, having a background in Neuroradiology & software engineering, is leading the digital transformation of the medical imaging industry by providing advanced technologies for hospitals and clinics that are scalable, adaptable, accessible, and can offer seamless interoperability while maintaining data integrity. We interviewed Dr. German Arango, the CEO, and Co-Founder of IMEXHS, to understand more about the company and its cutting-edge technology dedicated to the healthcare sector. Here are a few excerpts of the interview:

Q. What was the motivation behind establishing IMEXHS?

Founded in 2012, IMEXHS was initially developed to address the challenge of transmitting images and studies from rural communities in the Amazon rainforest, with limited internet to the Capital of Colombia, Bogota, where they would be interpreted by experts practicing teleradiology.

Q. What are your focus areas? Would you please share an overview?

At IMEXHS, we focus on developing medical imaging solutions to democratize access to high-tech medical imaging platforms. This allows IMEXHS to provide comprehensive services to healthcare institutions, seeking to improve the quality of life of physicians and patients through our solutions in Radiology (AQUILA), Pathology (ALULA), Cardiology (ANTEROS), and Veterinary care (VET). IMEXHS has become a disruptive player by providing a cutting-edge solution hosted in the cloud that adapts to sites of any size, complexity, and anywhere in the world.

Q. Walk us through the technology that made IMEXHS possible.

We offer innovative cloud-based medical imaging software solutions. Our disruptive technology enables best-practice medical care and access to the tools and processes that doctors and patients around the globe urgently require, with all the functionalities of a VNA web and secure cloud storage, a universal web viewer, RIS, PACS, artificial intelligence tools, advanced visualization, and business intelligence in a single solution. Our offering is not only accessible from any device and anywhere in the world, but it’s also designed to ensure broad compatibility and interoperability with other technologies.

Q. How have you evolved with the times to address the present-day problems of physicians?

Our company was founded by two neuroradiologists and software engineers specialized in the medical imaging industry, which means that from day one, both medicine and technology have been deeply present in our DNA as a company. We focus significantly on improving the day-to-day workflows of our customers and potential customers, and we do so by concentrating on two aspects:

Firstly, our product. We have developed an agile and intuitive Enterprise Imaging Platform, which is modern, patient-centric, facilitates clinical collaboration, and includes Business and Clinical Intelligence analytics, allowing physicians to zoom in on their operation. In parallel, we have also formed some very beneficial alliances with market leaders such as Nuance, where we have embedded their Speech to Text tool within our Platform, and Canon Medical, where we have seamlessly integrated their suite of Advanced Post-Processing tools also within our Platform. Such alliances bring an immense amount of value to our customers.

Furthermore, we are deeply aware of the enormous amount of pressure physicians are experiencing as approximately three-quarters of all patient care involves medical imaging, which is why we are obsessed with improving our customer’s productivity. For this, we have launched both proprietary AI solutions and integrated 3rd party AI tools within our Platform.

Secondly, our business model. In May 2020, we launched Aquila in the Cloud (AiC), which allows physicians in clinics and hospitals of any size and with any budget access to high-tech medical imaging technology, which historically has only been available to those institutions with deep pockets. We have created a standard offering, available on a fee per based model, which means physicians only pay for the study’s they process or store.

Q. Could you describe your typical management style and the type of employee that works well with you?

At IMEXHS, we believe in meritocracy. The best ideas and the best strategies to execute will always win. We believe in the potential of every idea and in synergistic collaboration to develop new solutions, strategies, and opportunities that will allow us to reach our ambition of democratizing access to high-tech medical imaging. Our employees are mostly young, extremely hard working, which is something I am very proud of, and above all, our team is very passionate about their work.

Q. What does influence mean to you? How do you wield your influence for the betterment of your clients and the world at large?

Influence for me is the ability to impact people’s lives positively, to improve their quality of life. Since the founding of IMEXHS, we have had the clear objective of improving the quality of life of patients and doctors through technology, to reach different countries and medical centers with state-of-the-art technology to improve their productivity and make their daily lives more efficient and effective. Medical technology is very expensive, but we want to democratize access to it so that no country or medical center should shy away from having the best technology because they simply cannot afford it. We want to generate digital transformation to change lives.

Q. How do you plan to transform your company into a future that is unfolding before you?

The world of medicine is constantly changing, and innovation and product development should always remain at the forefront of our culture. We believe that we must continuously seek and attract the best human talent possible because this is the best way to always be in constant change, to have new ideas and new resources to change the present with an eye on the future.

We believe AI will play a big part in medicine in the years to come, which is why the 400 million-plus images we currently have stored is one of our most valuable assets. As I mentioned before, three-quarters of all patient care requires a medical image, and at the same time, the number of radiologists is shrinking year after year. For this reason, we are adamant AI will be critical in providing the best patient outcome.

Q. How did you help out and innovate during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The outbreak of COVID-19 has affected the lives of people across the world. At IMEXHS, our priority is to ensure that all our stakeholders are as safe as possible. We have innovated with IMEXHS AI COVID helping physicians to efficiently interpret COVID pneumonia cases during their diagnosis. Our algorithms make our solutions smarter by helping physicians optimize and interpret exams in less time, alleviate their workload and generate a timely diagnosis that saves lives.
