Interview Highlights
Q. Can you tell us a bit about your “backstory”? What led you to this particular career path?
My career journey started on the Gold Coast in Australia, where I began as a legal secretary part-time while I studied for my Bachelor of Business. This role taught me the importance of attention to detail and precise communication.
In 2006, I made a significant leap by applying for the role of CIO at The O2 in London, inspired by the entrepreneurs around me. Despite initial doubts, I secured the position and thrived in this dynamic environment, managing IT infrastructure and leading a fantastic team. This role honed my skills in leadership, strategic planning, and collaboration.
After my tenure at The O2 in London, I moved back to Australia and took on various senior leadership roles, including positions at Queensland Health and eHealth NSW, where I led major digital transformations and infrastructure projects.
In 2021, I moved to Saudi Arabia to work on the NEOM project, which aims to build the world's first cognitive city. My experiences in these roles highlighted the need for a more integrated approach to managing complex projects, leading me to found JMB Project Management. My vision was to create a company that not only managed projects efficiently but also provided tailored solutions to meet the unique needs of clients across various industries.
Q. What inspired you to start JMB Project Management, and what was your vision for the company in those early days?
The inspiration for JMB Project Management came from recognizing a significant gap in the market for specialized project management services. My vision was to create a company that not only managed projects efficiently but also provided tailored solutions to meet the unique needs of clients across various industries. I wanted JMB to be synonymous with providing innovative, excellent, and client-centric solutions to companies. In the early days, the focus was on building a strong team of experts and leveraging advanced technologies to deliver outstanding results. I’m pleased to say that I have a great team of people who work and are loved by my clients.
Q. Can you tell us about a challenging moment you faced as a leader and how you overcame it? What did you learn from that experience?
One of the most challenging moments I faced was during my tenure at The O2 when we were preparing for the grand opening. There were numerous logistical and technical challenges in opening such a large entertainment venue.
I learned the importance of staying calm under pressure, maintaining clear communication with the team, and being adaptable. By fostering a collaborative environment and encouraging innovative problem-solving, we were able to successfully open the venue on time. This experience reinforced the value of teamwork and resilience in overcoming obstacles.
Q. We all need a little help along the journey. Who have been some of your mentors? Can you share a story about how they made an impact?
My main mentors have been the incredible teams I've had the privilege to work with throughout my career. Their dedication, insights, and hard work have continuously inspired me and taught me valuable lessons about leadership, collaboration, and innovation. Every project has provided a learning opportunity, and I’ve grown alongside these talented individuals.
Lately, I've been extremely fortunate to have a fantastic advisory board for JMB Project Management. Their expertise and guidance have been invaluable in navigating the complexities of creating and growing a business in the UAE. One particular instance that stands out is their advice on integrating local cultural nuances into our business practices, which has significantly improved our client relationships and project outcomes. Their support has not only enhanced my strategic thinking but also reinforced the importance of fostering strong, culturally aware business practices.
Q. In your opinion, what are the essential qualities of a great CEO and leader, and how do you strive to embody these qualities in your role?
A CEO must possess qualities such as integrity, empathy, vision, and the ability to empower others. I strive to embody these qualities by maintaining transparency in my actions, actively listening to my team, and fostering a culture of trust and respect. I believe in leading by example and encouraging my team to take ownership of their work. By setting a clear vision and supporting my team in achieving their goals, I aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute to the company’s success. I never have an issue getting my team to come to work every day, which speaks volumes.
Q. Do you have a book, podcast, or talk that’s had a deep impact on your thinking? Can you share a story with us? Can you explain why it was so resonant with you?
One book that has had a profound impact on my thinking is "Lean In" by Sheryl Sandberg. The book’s emphasis on women taking charge of their careers and the importance of mentorship resonated deeply with me. I remember reading it during a particularly challenging period in my career and feeling inspired to push through the obstacles. The book reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and the importance of supporting other women in the workplace. It motivated me to mentor and empower my team, fostering a culture of growth and development at JMB.
Q. How do you foster innovation and creativity within your team, and how important do you think these qualities are in project management?
Fostering innovation and creativity is crucial in project management as it drives problem-solving and continuous improvement. At JMB, we encourage a culture of open communication and collaboration. We regularly hold brainstorming sessions and innovation workshops where team members can share ideas and explore new approaches. I also believe in providing opportunities for continuous learning and development, ensuring that our team stays updated with the latest industry trends and technologies. By creating an environment that values creativity and innovation, we can deliver unique and effective solutions for our clients.
Q. What does a typical day look like for you as the CEO of JMB Project Management? How do you structure your day to maximize productivity?
A typical day for me begins early with a workout to keep my mind and body sharp. I start by working with my EA, reviewing my schedule, and setting priorities for the day. Mornings usually involve team meetings to align objectives and discuss ongoing projects. Mid-morning to early afternoon is dedicated to client meetings and strategic planning sessions. I also make time for mentoring team members, ensuring their growth and development. Afternoons are reserved for business development and exploring new opportunities. Evenings are for winding down, often spent with family or catching up on industry trends. This structured approach helps me stay focused and productive throughout the day.
Q. As JMB Project Management continues to evolve and grow, what legacy do you hope to leave as a leader, and how do you envision the company's impact on the project management industry and beyond in the years to come?
As a leader, I hope to leave a legacy of innovation, excellence, and empowerment. I envision JMB making a significant impact by integrating sustainable practices, leveraging advanced technologies, and supporting diverse talent. Ultimately, I hope JMB’s success inspires other businesses to prioritize innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity.
Q. As a seasoned entrepreneur who has navigated the highs and lows of building a successful business, what message or advice would you offer to budding entrepreneurs who are just starting their journey?
My advice to budding entrepreneurs is to believe in your vision and stay resilient. Entrepreneurship is a challenging journey filled with ups and downs, but perseverance and adaptability are key. Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors and peers who can provide guidance and encouragement. Don’t be afraid to take risks and learn from your mistakes.
