Maintaining control of large buildings can be a huge challenge. Aside from growing utility prices, certain places can get overly hot or cold. The area’s job requirements are usually out of sync with the lighting levels, which are frequently uneven. Employees who are alert and engaged show that the ventilation in some sections is excellent, while employees who are dozing off and keeping an eye on the time show that it is dismal in other regions. Of course, managing multiple buildings makes the situation worse.

Most of these issues can be resolved using a building automation system (BAS). Building automation systems, when installed properly, can increase energy efficiency, cut operating and maintenance costs, improve indoor air quality, increase occupant comfort, and boost productivity.

Sherie McCarty is an esteemed figure in the field of engineering, and her success there sheds light on her passion for developing strategies that will make construction dependable and affordable for every client while upholding the highest safety standards. She does this through her company, MAS CONSTRUCTION SERVICES.

Sherie McCarty (CEO) spoke exclusively to the CIO Bulletin about what unique factors make MAS CONSTRUCTION SERVICES one of the leading HVAC/R construction experts.

Interview Highlights

Q. As the CEO of MAS Construction Services, what are your major roles and responsibilities?

I founded the company in 2011. We are a mechanical contractor that does commercial and industrial HVAC construction and commissioning. I basically run the day-to-day operations. I do most of the paperwork we need to submit for approval to work on site in the environments we work in, and I make sure all our safety requirements are current, along with our licenses and certifications. I manage our finances and motivate the other employees; I answer questions and give directions, and all my employees understand that if they come across a problem, they are responsible for finding a solution before bringing it to my attention, which they do.

Q. What is the most challenging task you have ever accomplished?

We recently completed our 50th project with a long-term client to keep them constantly working with our team, and now we see them leaning more and more on us for more complex projects.

Q. How, according to you, can leaders create a more diverse and inclusive culture?

Ask businesses like ours to consult a non-DBE—we have a compliance officer that can also help—and over the last few years we have held meetings to help non-DBE’s understand best practices and ways we can work together.

Q. What are the pros and cons of being a female entrepreneur?

Starting out with the unknown was a big con; however, when I hit my stride and figured out the cycle and pace of the projects, planning became easier.

Q. What impact do you want to have on the world? What change do you want to see or make happen?

Honestly, being a woman in a highly dominated male industry and being successful, I see more women in the trades. More women are realizing they can do this type of work. There have been many women before me who inspired me, and many of them took me under their leadership. I do the same, and the next generations need to see that anything is possible.

Q. What advice would you like to give to budding female entrepreneurs?

Be prepared for things not always going the way you expect. Be patient and pace yourself; there will be many challenges, and how you respond to those challenges is where you will learn the most. Be customer-focused. Pace yourself and make time to be with your family.

Q. What are your business goals?

I plan to open two more offices in the near future, and we see better opportunities for our team, so expansion is our next step.
