Leading by Example

When it comes to corporate citizenship, the company’s mission is to make positive changes in the communities where they live and work. This has only become clearer over the past 18 months, and OpenText has been proudly supporting its employees, customers, and local communities. The company launched a key initiative last year to help combat food insecurity by donating $1 million USD to foodbanks in 21 countries where it operates around the world. Through this program, OpenText was able to provide 4 million meals to those in need.

Last year, OpenText also launched its first corporate citizenship report, which it followed up with its second annual report this year. In these reports, the company outlined how it supports its employees, customers, and communities throughout the pandemic, its efforts to support Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I), how OpenText continues to improve its environmental footprint and support a culture of Tech for Good.

The company believes the future of growth is both inclusive and sustainable, and announced bold 2030 objectives called “The OpenText Zero Initiative”: Zero Barriers, Zero Waste, and Zero Emissions.

OpenText Zero Initiative commitments include, by 2030:

  • Zero Barriers: Majority diverse company and greater than 40% female leaders
  • Zero Waste: From operations
  • Zero Emissions: 50% reduction by 2030, and net-zero emissions by 2040

“OpenText is committed to building an inclusive environment where enthusiastic, skilled, and diverse employees can thrive. The challenges of the past two years have only strengthened this commitment, and we have developed new programs to support employee wellness, give back to our communities, and strengthen equity, diversity and inclusion.”

Flexibility the Key

During the last two decades, enterprises worldwide have experienced unprecedented technological change: the transformation to digital enterprises. The evolution of the physical into the digital world has affected every dimension of society and commerce, from the enterprise to the individual. When a company becomes digital, they use technology to better engage customers, make their employees more creative and productive, gain transparency and flexibility in their supply chain, and increase their cyber resilience. There is no doubt that these advantages result in higher revenue growth, greater efficiencies, and the create new business opportunities and competitive advantages.

An organization that remains physical will simply not reap the well-documented benefits of digital, nor will they be able to change as quickly as their digital counterparts, which will result in their near-certain demise.

Differentiating through digital requires reimagining business models, processes, and experiences into a digital-first approach. This requires organizations to have the right strategy, people, processes, and technology. The dramatic shift to a distributed and modern work environment has forced companies worldwide to accelerate adoption of Information Management technology. While some companies struggle to adapt at the pace that is now required, OpenText is uniquely positioned to guide its customers now and during future disruption.

The New Distributed World

The ongoing pandemic has changed the way we work forever and OpenText is committed to helping leaders navigate the ‘new normal’.

“We are going through the fastest technology disruption in the history of the world. The Fourth Industrial Revolution had already resulted in huge increases in connectivity, automation and computing power. Now, the widespread adoption of virtual work models has led to a permanent shift in how we communicate, collaborate and innovate.”

The company believes the future of work will be a combination of where you work and how you work, and it’s time for businesses to reimagine what kind of organization they want to be.

The pre-pandemic organization was centralized and office based. Corporate decision-making was restricted to a few key players with managers controlling time, communication networks and delegation of tasks. In the distributed world, the home office, or studio, is the default. Employees look for broader access to data, more input in decision-making, and more autonomy. Managers delegate authority and provide scope for meaningful work. With this new model, leaders will need to respond to employee expectations that have changed around flexibility, well-being and a connection to the overall company’s mission.

“To be successful, distributed work must be about transforming the entire organization, not just adapting to the moment. It must be done with foresight and flexibility, so that innovation thrives, and employees feel a sense of connection and purpose.”

In addition, the distributed organization must be digital. OpenText Cloud Editions helps businesses digitally transform to grow faster, be more efficient, and fuel creativity.

“Going forward, organizations will no longer be shaped by our buildings. Rather, it will be the edges—our people, our culture, our innovations—that will shape the distributed companies of the future.”
