The following excerpts are taken from a conversation with Bill Douglas, the CEO of OpticWise

Q. When was OpticWise founded? Can you tell us about the journey so far?

OpticWise was founded by Drew Hall over 15 years ago. A network & technology genius, his team was solving problems in the student housing space. I joined OpticWise 6 years ago, after which we shifted our focus entirely to multitenant commercial real estate (CRE) owners.

Q. What is OpticWise’s philosophy? How do you implement it in your approach?

Our philosophy is simple: Take care of the client. Listen, solve their problems, and service their tenants. In other words, we deliver substantial value to all stakeholders.

We implement this by hiring great team members and maintaining an incredible culture revolving around our core values.

Q. How important is innovation at OpticWise? How do you foster innovation in your processes and service offerings for your customers?

We are CRE technology thought leaders, so innovation is at the center of all we do.

We spend a significant amount on research & development (R&D) and encourage all of our team members to invest time in creating new and better ways to provide services & solutions.

This “find a better way” approach led to the birth of our Building of Things™ (BoT™) strategy, which is changing both design and operation of CRE digital infrastructures.

Q. Can you elaborate on your “Ultimate User Privacy Policy”?

We don’t retain any user information and we certainly do not treat the user as a commodity—meaning we do not collect user activity data and we do not monetize anything about the user. What a 5S™ user does is completely up to the user and, at all times, completely private.

Extremely unique to the market, we provide this 5™ User Ultimate Privacy Policy in writing to clients and their tenants and apply it in everything we do.

Q. What were some challenges you overcame through innovative solutions? Can you give us a few examples?

Change is difficult for many. Simultaneously shifting both our offering and our customer base appeared bold, however, we were listening to our clients and stayed laser-focused on solving the problems they were facing.

Consistency in message, focus, and vision prevailed, and, in time, client successes began mounting as did our revenues and profitability resulting in tremendous growth.

Q. What are the future plans for OpticWise?

We have global expansion on our horizon. We want to see every multi-tenant user in any CRE space be private and protected while they are completely mobile. There is no reason for any tenant to be relegated to their leased space, nor is there ever a reason for a tenant’s privacy to be violated or monetized.

This has ramifications in the technical and commercial aspects of the “status quo”, however, we know that end-users want this. Our best clients embrace the user, which, in turn, results in massive financial returns for them.

Bill Douglas is the CEO of OpticWise, a global technology leader serving multitenant CRE markets enabling significant monetization of technology assets.

He’s a lifetime entrepreneur, having started/sold/acquired/exited multiple businesses, made the INC & others growth lists, awarded a US Patent, and more. He’s a mechanical engineering graduate from Georgia Tech and of the Entrepreneurial Master’s Program at MIT.

Bill has survived two near-death experiences and overcome a major medical diagnosis, thus the ResilienceGuy nickname.

He’s a father of two young men and enjoys fitness, biking, skiing, volleyball & golf.
