Solving a 100-year old problem

Propane is one of the leading energy sources that is used in everyday household and eateries to cook and grill food items. In the United States alone, over 70 million people use propane gas tanks for commercial and domestic purposes. But there has been a persistent problem that has existed with propane tanks since they went mainstream: People fail to realize that they have run out of propane before they can have another tank ready for them. Blue Sky Propane saw the opportunity and decided to build a smarter propane tank that would solve this issue.

The company looked to Sunflower Lab to help them in this endeavor. The smart digital tank from Blue Sky Propane needed a digital companion that would provide the users real-time insights on their tank levels to help them assess when to re-order and pay for the propane directly from a mobile app.

Sunflower Lab came up with a digital solution that could provide near real-time data on the propane levels. The users could, as a result, decide ahead of time when to re-order. In fact, the users could even automatically re-order and schedule a time when they wanted to get their propane tanks refilled.

The app even gave customers the necessary insights by providing them historical reports and analytics on their usage. They could view their fuel consumption, average and total gas deliveries, total gallons of gas consumed and also the billing amounts for the entire year or within a specific period through filters.

The app allowed the users to login through TouchID biometrics. The app also gave Blue Sky Propane happier customers and more predictable revenue. Customers could now order and make payments to take care of their gas requirements by simply entering the total quantity they needed in gallons and the propane tank would reach their billing address before they ran out.

Born out of late-night coding sessions

Sunflower was co-founded by two friends, Ronak Patel (CEO) and Yash Patel (CTO), during one of their intense late-night coding sessions. They had been in the IT industry for over a decade before founding Sunflower. Their first client was Forbes. So, they decided to pitch in to buy a Macbook to start developing on the Apple platform and went on a coding binge. They were successful in building their first iPad application called Forbes Top 100. They haven’t turned back since then.

Sunflower Lab has grown from a team of two to a team which has over 75 people. The company heavily invests in training and building new concepts using the emerging technologies.

He co-founded Sunflower Lab in 2010. Prior to Sunflower Lab, he was the CTO of SHARE, a microtransit service. Before that he served as a Consultant for Pillar Technology, Sears, Nationwide Insurance and TD Bank USA. He is an avid entrepreneur and technologist at heart.
