T. Mary Smith-Montgomery, P23 Labs Founder and CEO: ‘We are the first laboratory to offer a new take on personalized medicine and molecular genetic testing’

Molecular diagnostic testing in symptomatic individuals has become increasingly sophisticated. Earlier, such testings were carried out on, at most, one or a few loci. The adaption of large-insert clone arrays and, later, oligonucleotide arrays changed this landscape by allowing a patient’s entire genome to be queried at improved resolution, thereby allowing the detection of medium to large genomic lesions. Today, it can be done at single-nucleotide resolution thanks to cheaper, faster, and increasingly accurate whole-exome sequencing (WES) and whole-genome sequencing
(WGS).

P23 Labs is a high-complexity molecular diagnostics laboratory that specializes in diagnostic testing of infectious diseases. It offers a full suite of molecular diagnostic tests that also include COVID-19. P23’s dedication to the coronavirus pandemic response includes respiratory pathogen profiles and other infectious diseases using its state-of-the-art molecular methods. P23 has created a quality laboratory that focuses on fortifying patients’ and providers’ relationships by removing healthcare barriers. Their staff has a combined 150 plus years of experience in genetics, epidemiology, business, finance, and clinical medical practice. P23 Labs combine innovation, quality, and creativity with science and information technology to emerge as a molecular testing leader. We had a conversation with Dr. T. Mary Smith-Montgomery, the company’s founder and CEO, to get to know more about the company.

Why did you start personalized medicine and molecular genetic testing?

The current laboratory testing industry needs a state-of-the-art clinical laboratory to bridge the gap between lab testing and drug development. As we better understand our body and our DNA’s power, we understand how we uniquely process things that we put into our bodies. This helps us manage treatment outcomes and actualize the concept of informed consent. Understanding your DNA and unlocking the power of how to manage your health creates a system of wellness. This information can be used to reduce adverse drug events and improve outcomes for the individual and their good health unit. A good health unit includes the family, physicians, treatment team, pharmacist, and friends.

Why should people choose you over others?

We believe people should choose P23 Labs as their premier diagnostic testing laboratory as we offer a full suite of molecular diagnostic testing and deliver laboratory excellence through our innovative, non-invasive, and potentially life-saving technology. We have a mission to remove healthcare barriers and fortify the relationship between patients and healthcare providers by being a reliable, trusted partner to healthcare providers. We can be trusted as we do not store or sell your information, DNA, test results, or demographics to anyone. We offer the epitome of quality healthcare at affordable rates.

What do you specialize in? How do you make the most of the latest technology?

We specialize in high-complexity molecular diagnostic testing, specifically PCR and genetic sequencing-based testing. We make the most of the latest technology by understanding that technology. We spend a lot of time educating our patients and clients on what the technology and results mean and how they can be applied to treat an individual’s total well-being.

Maintaining a healthy body is crucial. How does P23 Labs help with this regard?

We provide health information and health literacy using the individual’s DNA to promote and maintain a healthy body most productively and sustainably.

How is P23 Respiratory ONE helpful during the pandemic?

Our P23 Respiratory ONE test is beneficial during the pandemic. If a patient visits with their doctor presenting COVID-19 symptoms and the doctor only prescribes a COVID-19 test, and the results come back negative, that patient is still sick and still looking for answers. There are many bacterial and viral infections that present the same symptoms as COVID-19, so to us, it makes sense to run a test that checks off over 20 different respiratory virus and bacteria to help the patient determine which sickness or infection they have, which will assist them and their physician in making a treatment plan.

Please explain to us about offering COVID-19 Test with P23 Respiratory ONE Solution.

To combine these tests, P23 Respiratory ONE must be prescribed or requested by a physician. What is remarkable about our P23 Respiratory ONE test is that there is absolutely no change in the way you would submit a specimen. The test can be conducted on the same COVID-19 saliva specimen sample, and no further specimens would need to be provided. This is highly efficient from both a patient and laboratory point of view, as there aren’t multiple sets of instructions and different specimens to be collected. There is also no patient discomfort as the sample collection is entirely non-invasive.
