Tesseract Health – Making Global Impact by Improving Patient Care

The health monitoring system provides multiple options to change the traditional management of patients. Moreover, this solution reduces the cost of health care and helps the hospital to improve the treatment process, and provides a remote health monitoring system. The health monitoring system may also free up more beds in hospitals that can be occupied by patients who need urgent help. After analyzing health indicators with the help of AI, the system may suggest that a certain patient can be discharged and recover at home while receiving medical advice remotely. This allows doctors to focus on people whose lives are in danger. The use of image analytics tools developed by the tech industry is becoming more widespread in the healthcare space. By peering into the eye with a camera and an algorithm, recent studies and advances in AI have enabled accurate prediction of numerous conditions, such as neurological and cardiovascular risk.

Tesseract is building a portable, affordable device for monitoring and preventing disease. Tesseract Health is part of the 4Catalyzer accelerator, with over $700 Million in funding, 300 scientists and engineers. Its offices are in Guilford CT, New York City, and Palo Alto. Tesseract Health’s mission is to democratize healthcare and improve lives using the wealth of health information in the human eye. Tesseract knows that the best way to predict the future is to make it, and that the retina will be the new noninvasive diagnostic platform of the 21st century. This future will be made possible by Tesseract Health and its innovative Tesseract iC platform incorporating novel multidimensional sensors and artificial intelligence. Tesseract Health is part of 4Catalyzer, a rapidly growing health technology accelerator with offices in CT, NY, CA, and Taiwan, and offices opening soon in Miami, Boston, and San Diego. Other notable 4Catalyzer companies include Butterfly Network (NYSE: BFLY), Quantum-Si (NASDAQ: CAPA/QSI), and Hyperfine.

The Tesseract iC platform

It is intended to diagnose a wide range of diseases without drawing blood. The platform includes a novel chemical sensor and combined multiple dimensions of imaging technology and AI to image the retina, which is the only part of the human body where it is possible to directly see arteries, veins, capillaries, and nerves. The Tesseract iC platform is a binocular eye imaging device that is portable, affordable, and operable by anyone, supporting a post COVID world focused on cloud-connected telemedicine. Tesseract plans to usher in a new branch of diagnostics fusing the best of imaging and laboratory medicine, a truly world’s first to support screening, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment in a number of clinical domains to go well beyond ophthalmology to primary care, cardiology, neurology and more. The company says recent advances in artificial intelligence have enabled accurate prediction of a person’s blood pressure, diabetic risk, smoking history, Alzheimer’s progression and heart attack risk by peering into the eye with a camera and an algorithm.

Democratizing Health Care

Tesseract is in good company being part of the 4Catalyzer incubator. Two of its startups — Butterfly Network, which makes a pocket-sized ultrasound machine, and Quantum-Si, which is developing a protein-sequencing platform that promises to lead to better ways to diagnose and treat cancer and other diseases — recently went public after merging with special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs. Typical ocular imaging devices tend to be large, expensive, and non-portable, limiting their use outside of the traditional healthcare system. Small, portable, cost-effective ocular imaging devices that can be used in a variety of locations such as primary care offices, retail stores, churches, community centers, developing nations, etc., will help identify vision-threatening eye disease at an early stage. Tesseract aims to disrupt health care by leveraging the wealth of information that exists in the human eye to promote health equity.

The Visionary Leader Upfront

Dr. Vicky Demas serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Tesseract Health. She brings over 20 years’ experience to the company with a deep history of innovation and discovery in diagnostic platforms (wearable and point of care), medical devices, and nanotechnology. Before joining Tesseract as CEO, Dr. Demas led the development of new products at the cancer screening company GRAIL, where she also managed the scientific and technology portfolio and led a cross functional competitive intelligence program. She supported the development of the core platform technology which formed the basis of the company’s first multi cancer early detection test (Galleri), and she led GRAIL’s post-diagnostic efforts.

Dr. Vicky Demas holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab/Livermore Lab.

“As a 4Catalyzer company, our guiding philosophy is to build on three pillars that form a virtuous circle: state of the art silicon devices, cloud-based data management, and deep learning.”
