A Legacy of Passion and Hospitality

Growing up in a household full of creativity and adventure, Anke was influenced by the diverse personalities of her parents. Her father’s love for travel and his non-conformist spirit ignited a sense of curiosity in her, while her mother’s nurturing and creative nature filled their home with warmth and love. From an early age, Anke developed a deep passion for hosting, creating meaningful moments through shared meals, lively conversations, and the beauty of simple pleasures. Her career as a Color & Material Designer further shaped her ability to bring environments to life with attention to detail, sustainability, and creativity.

The idea for Twelve Senses Retreat first sparked during a trip to Valle de Guadalupe, where Anke visited La Villa De La Valle. Inspired by the vision of Phil and Eileen, co-owners of the retreat, who had left their Los Angeles careers to build a life in Mexico, Anke realized the power of passion, artisanship, and sustainability. This experience became the foundation for her own dream—creating a retreat that blended thoughtful design, sustainability, and hospitality.

Anke and her team carefully selected materials that reflect the essence of nature, emphasizing minimalism, durability, and eco-friendliness. Much of the furniture and accessories are sourced from local artisans in Mexico, and the retreat features stunning products from Europe. Local artisans from Object in Tijuana helped bring the vision to life, while Marrea Decor contributed beautiful pillows and throws that add warmth and texture to the rooms. The bedding, including organic sheets from Coyuchi, and mattresses from The Mattress Makers, showcase a commitment to high-quality, sustainable materials.

The building itself is a masterpiece of eco-friendly design, with natural, sustainable materials used throughout. The exterior features Shou Sugi Ban, an ancient Japanese technique that preserves wood by charring it, creating a highly durable finish that withstands the elements.

Inside, the walls are cladded with Shou Sugi Ban, each room representing one of the four elements. The Earth room, for example, is adorned with Beetle Kill wood, repurposed by Delta Millworks, giving the space a unique character. Zero VOC paints ensure that the indoor air quality remains fresh and safe, while low-water landscaping with native plants helps conserve water and maintain a harmonious connection with nature.
