Where the Power of Nature meets the Logic of Science: ChromaDex

ChromaDex is the leading provider of phytochemical reference standards, botanical reference materials, and research grade materials for the natural products industry. Today, it lists over 1800 phytochemicals and 400 botanical reference materials in its catalog.

ChromaDex has its complementary business units that discover, acquire, develop, and commercialize patented and proprietary ingredient technologies. It addresses the dietary supplement, food, beverage, skincare and pharmaceutical markets. Apart from this, it’s ingredient technologies unit focuses on natural product fine chemicals (known as “phytochemicals”), chemistry and analytical testing services, and product regulatory and safety consulting (known as Spherix Consulting).

“As a result of our relationships with leading universities and research institutions, we are able to discover and license early stage, IP-backed ingredient technologies,” says the CEO of ChromaDex, Frank L. Jaksch Jr. the company then utilizes its in-house chemistry, regulatory and safety consulting business units to develop commercially viable ingredients.

The ingredient portfolio of ChromaDex is backed by clinical and scientific research, as well as extensive IP protection. ChromaDex leverages its complementary business units to discover, acquire, develop, and commercialize patented and proprietary ingredient technologies. The portfolio’s patented ingredient technologies include NIAGEN® nicotinamide riboside; IMMULINA™, a spirulina extract; and AnthOrigin™, anthocyanins derived from a domestically-produced, water-extracted purple corn.

NIAGEN®, also known as nicotinamide riboside (NR), is a unique member of the vitamin B3 family. The body converts NR into Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) which is an essential molecule found in every living cell. The NAD+ enables cells to convert the food that we eat into the energy that we need. If NAD+ levels are low, then communication between the cell nucleus and the mitochondria may be impaired and the mitochondria may dysfunction as a result. When this occurs, everything begins to break down. The reality of NAD+ levels is highest at birth and decreases dramatically with age. Also, certain lifestyle choices such as over-eating or a sedentary routine deplete NAD+ levels. Boosting the NAD+ levels promote cellular metabolism, mitochondrial function, and energy production. This is where NIAGEN comes in. In one of the studies, it showed that NIAGEN increased NAD+ levels by 33% in 8 hours.

  • AnthOrigin™

AnthOrigin is a US origin, water-extracted, non-GMO purple corn husk extract containing less than 15% of anthocyanins, which are beneficial compounds of healthful antioxidant compounds within the flavonoid group of plant nutrients. The particular variety of purple corn grown in the United States for AnthOrigin maintains more of its rich, purple anthocyanins in the husk versus in the kernel than traditional varieties. Once dried and grounded, similar to tea leaves, this material becomes ideal for a heated, clean water extraction. Some of the other benefits include a wide array of the formulation. Whether you are adding AnthOrigin to a current berry based supplement for a broader spectrum formula or developing a new, natural RTD supplement, this beautiful purple powder delivers a clean taste profile along with its health benefits.

  • pTeroPure®

pTeroPure, is also known as pterostilbene, is closely related to resveratrol. Its advantages include superior bioavailability, significantly longer half-life, greater cellular uptake, and greater oral absorption and metabolic stability. While structurally related to resveratrol, pterostilbene differs from resveratrol by having an additional molecular group that increases its affinity for fats. This structural difference results in improved bioavailability by reducing its susceptibility to first pass metabolism in the intestinal cells and liver.

PURENERGY is a co-crystal that combines caffeine and pTeroPure. The co-crystal links the two molecules together which impacts the way our bodies utilize the molecules individually. In this way, it provides a truly synergistic effect. PURENERGY reimagines how one can energize throughout the day. With PURENERGY, consumer products can be finely tuned for the ideal sensory and energy experience. PURENERGY is much more than caffeine as it also contains pTeroPure which provides additional benefits.

IMMULINA is a spirulina extract and the predominant active compounds are Braun-type lipoproteins which are useful for improving human immune function. These lipoproteins are present at much greater levels than those found within commonly used immune enhancing botanicals such as Echinacea and ginseng. IMMULINA has multiple human studies that demonstrate immune support.
