WinterCorp – Architecting the Skyscrapers of the Data World with Decades of Expertise, Innovative Solutions, and Strategic Vision

In the dynamic landscape of data management, WinterCorp stands as a trailblazer with over three decades of unrivaled experience. Since its inception in 1992, the company has architected and engineered some of the largest and most demanding databases in operation today – what Richard Winter calls the skyscrapers of the world of data and analytics.

Specializing in meeting the most demanding requirements rooted in scale, query complexity, workload volatility and business-critical service levels, WinterCorp offers consulting services that focus on the data platform and the solution architecture. Their hands-on experience, proven methods, and technical expertise make them a go-to partner for organizations navigating the complexities of the modern data ecosystem.

In an exclusive interview with CIO Bulletin, Richard Winter, CEO of WinterCorp, sheds light on decades of expertise, innovation, and a commitment to excellence that have positioned the company as a trusted leader in the realm of data management.

Interview Highlights

Q. What was the founding vision of WinterCorp, and how has that vision evolved over the years in response to changes in the data management landscape?

I founded WinterCorp as a consulting company specializing in the unique requirements of the largest, most complex databases, especially those with demanding operational needs. Even most database professionals have little experience in this area. The vision has evolved to encompass cloud, AI/ML and distributed architectures, always focusing on large scale and demanding service levels for the data platform.

Q. Can you provide an overview of the primary products and services that WinterCorp currently offers to its clients in the realm of data architecture and engineering?

Our three most popular services are:

  1. Platform Selection: When a major enterprise is about to build, modernize, or migrate a very large analytic database—whether it's a data warehouse, data lakehouse, or data lake—we provide help in selecting the best platform for client requirements.

  2. Crisis Resolution: In the process of building a significant analytic database, clients may encounter severe problems, such as poor performance, instability, or excessive costs. In such cases, we are called in to: (a) swiftly mitigate the crisis; (b) identify the root causes; and (c) chart a path forward.

  3. Cost Optimization: When a client aims to better align the costs of a large analytic database with business interests, WinterCorp provides a certified FinOps expert or team to recommend changes to optimize expenses.

Q. How does WinterCorp approach designing and implementing data architectures for clients? Can you walk us through your typical consulting process?

For platform selection, we initiate the process with a thorough examination of the business vision and desired outcomes (refer to the Figure 1). Subsequently, we consider industry trends, current needs, and projected growth. This comprehensive analysis yields a set of quantified architectural requirements applicable to the upcoming years. The next steps involve risk assessment, definition of an evaluation process, criteria development, and option evaluation. In each phase, we confirm that key assumptions and conclusions line up directly with client business interests and needs.

Most practitioners and consultants do not quantify data warehouse requirements. But, quantification is absolutely critical to correctly evaluating options for these large scale, demanding implementations.

Our evaluations are rooted in facts and measurements. Leveraging our extensive experience in this process, coupled with our in-depth knowledge of products and technology, we excel at uncovering the true capabilities and limitations of each option for our clients. When necessary, we conduct tests, including custom benchmarks tailored to the client’s data, query, and workload requirements, to pinpoint the platform that best aligns with their needs.

Our overall platform selection process looks like this:

Figure 2: Main flow of the WinterCorp Data Platform Evaluation Process

The client receives a strategic decision founded on how the distinctive advantages of the recommended platform relate to critical business interests.

Our process significantly differs from standard software evaluations. While most assessments rely on a list of features that clients struggle to connect with any critical business outcome, our evaluation is firmly grounded in business interests, quantitative estimates of requirements, and fact-based engineering analysis. As a result, our clients secure a platform that empowers them to succeed even in the face of the toughest challenges.

Q. Could you share some notable success stories or case studies where WinterCorp's data architecture consulting services made a significant impact on a client's business outcomes?

In one instance, an aerospace client sought to construct a data warehouse much larger than any previously seen in their industry. The project presented unique challenges: complex queries, a high query rate, continuous influx of new data, non-negotiable data availability, soaring ingest volumes, and stringent requirements for data latency and query response times.

To address these challenges, we devised a custom benchmark tailored to the specific scale and requirements. Multiple bidders ran the benchmark, and we meticulously evaluated the results. Only one vendor presented a compelling case that they could meet the stringent requirements, and we wholeheartedly recommended this vendor. The outcome? The client achieved success.

The success of this project at the required scale was only possible with the chosen platform. Furthermore, without our custom benchmark, finding the one feasible solution would have been an insurmountable challenge.

Q. In the context of 2024, what do you see as the most influential trends in data architecture, and how is WinterCorp positioned to address these trends?

The current key trend revolves around generative AI, with the data platform directly on the critical path to scaling its implementation. We specialize in offering fact- and measurement-based analysis and testing to assist our clients in achieving success with generative AI, machine learning, and other advanced data technologies.

Q. Looking ahead, what is WinterCorp's strategic vision for the future, especially in terms of advancing data architecture consulting? Are there new markets, technologies, or service areas the company is keen on exploring?

After generative AI, the next major advance is likely to be causal AI, implementing systems with the ability to reason. When reasoning is applied to data on a large scale, we anticipate another revolution in insight, productivity, and business value. We foresee significant variations in how different vendors implement causal AI at scale – and we will be at the forefront with our unique approach to platform evaluation.

Q. Is there anything else you want us to highlight that we might have missed?

Many people today appear to be unaware that truly large and complex databases demand a distinct approach. Most of the popular cloud database services can handle only simpler problems at large scale. If you are migrating an enterprise-class data warehouse to the cloud, you encounter profound risks. With the WinterCorp approach, you can avoid these devastating problems as you build out or scale up.

Finally, it is critical to appreciate that the best data platform for one customer may not necessarily be the best platform for the next customer. A platform that is a good fit can be five to ten times less costly to operate than one that is a poor fit. At enterprise scale, it is a grave mistake to base your choice on the popularity of a platform. Our fact- and measurement-based analysis and testing are the only ways you will know what works best for you.
