Thor: Love and Thunder secures $302M globally on its release weekend

Thor: Love and Thunder has earned $302 million in its first weekend since its release at the global box office and secured a victory worthy of a seat in Valhalla.

The latest movie from Marvel and a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Thor:  Love and Thunder, brought in $159 million internationally and another $143 million in North America.

Thor: Love and Thunder were slightly behind domestic estimates of $150 million. It performed very well and earned more than Thor: Ragnarok’s $123 million debut weekend in 2017. It also sits just behind Jurassic World: Dominion’s $145 million and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ $185 million for the biggest debut weekend of 2022.

According to Comscore, movie theater owners are encouraged because Thor: Love and Thunder continues a strong summer movie season, which has generated $2.27 billion to date. A promising sign for the exhibition industry is that returns are 217% above the same point in 2021 and only 12% behind the same point in 2019.

The fourth installment in the Thor franchise cost $250 million to produce, and Marvel has spent nearly $100 million to promote it, so these numbers should be auspicious for the studio. Lastly, Thor: Love and Thunder had the 12th best opening of any MCU film.
