Microsoft is closing the virtual reality platform AltspaceVR

Microsoft bought the virtual reality platform AltspaceVR in 2017, and it will stop operating on March 10, 2023. According to a blog post by the AltspaceVR team, the company is moving its emphasis to immersive experiences supported by Microsoft Mesh.

“As we look to the future, we see the opportunity for VR expanding beyond consumer into business and now have an even greater goal: a more open, accessible, and secure version of immersive experiences in the metaverse,” it said.

Microsoft is eager to know what is yet to come, including the introduction of Microsoft Mesh, a new platform for connection and collaboration that will first empower offices worldwide.

Microsoft recently reduced its employment by 5%, which affected 10,000 workers. The business will keep investing in areas that are important to its long-term success, which means it will divest from businesses that are not as important to the company's long-term growth and competitiveness.
