Sebastien Bubeck, VP of GenAI research at Microsoft, is leaving to join OpenAI, one of many recent talent shifts in the evolving AI landscape.

Sebastien Bubeck, Microsoft’s Vice President of Generative AI research is leaving the company to take up another position at OpenAI, which owns ChatGPT. This was said on Monday; however, details of what position Bubeck will assume at the AI Company supported by Microsoft were not shared.

A Microsoft representative affirmed that Bubeck is set to part ways with the institution as he, “decided to leave Microsoft to pursue his ambitions to build AGI,” while noting that the two will work together still and stronger.

Bubeck's ability to leave is part of a series of important resignations that have taken place in both Microsoft and, as well as Open AI, where Mira Murati, the chief technical officer declared her exit from Microsoft in the previous month. “We are aware of the rumors, but as we mentioned earlier, he’s part of a normal reorg at the company, so it has nothing to do with that,” the company’s head Sam Altman explained.

Interestingly, most of the co-authors of Bubeck’s work on the small-scale Phi LLMs developed by Microsoft are expected to stay at Microsoft and focus on the same project.

His joining of the OpenAI team signifies yet another complex transition in the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence where the issue of talent is a problem. With regard to the fact that both ventures are highly productive, the consequences of Bubeck’s transfer might influence the aspects of the evolution of artificial general intelligence.
