MediaTek unveils its Helio M70 chipset at Computex

MediaTek chose to debut its 5G ready chipset at Computex. The chipset called Helio M70 will allow the Taiwanese chip-maker compete with Qualcomm which is its biggest competition in the 5G mobile phone segment.

The groundbreaking chipset is a multi-mode, 7nm 5G system-on-chip (SoC) which is bound to be seen in the first wave of 5G high-end smartphones soon. The Helio M70 packs in Arm’s Cortex-A77 CPU, Mali-G77 GPU, and MediaTek’s most advanced AI processing unit. The chipset will support 5G stand alone and also non-stand alone for sub-6GHz networks.

MediaTek’s President Joe Chen said: “Everything about this chip is designed for the first wave of flagship 5G devices. The leading-edge technology in this chipset makes it the most powerful 5G SoC announced to date and puts MediaTek at the forefront of 5G SoC design.”

The company is planning to make the chipset available for customer samples in Q3 of 2019 and further expects the chipset to debut in commercial devices in Q1 of 2020.

Chen further said: “The industry, OEMs and consumers have high expectations for 5G. We are confident devices powered by MediaTek’s 5G chipset, with its impressive architecture, leading imaging features, powerful AI and ultra-fast 5G speeds, will deliver incredible experiences.”

In the coming months, MediaTek plans to introduce the full specifications of the MediaTek 5G SoC.
