The percentage of American people who say they frequently acquire news from TikTok has more than tripled in only three years, rising from 3% in 2020 to 14% in 2023.
A tiny but increasing percentage of American adults claim to frequently check TikTok for news. This stands in contrast to the consumption of news on many other social media platforms, which has either decreased or remained relatively stable in recent years.
Primarily recognized for its short-form video sharing feature, TikTok has gained significant traction among teenagers and young adults, with two-thirds of them reporting having used the platform at some point.
Adults between the ages of 18 and 29 are most likely to report that they frequently check TikTok for news. A greater percentage of Americans than in previous years — roughly 32% of those in this age group — say they routinely acquire news there. This contrasts with 15% of people in the 30-49 age range, 7% of those in the 50-64 age range, and only 3% of people 65 and older.
More adult users in the United States are also obtaining their news from TikTok. Compared to 33% in 2022, 43% of TikTok users now claim to routinely get news via the platform. Users of TikTok are now as likely to obtain news from the platform as they are from Facebook. Nevertheless, users of X, previously known as Twitter, are more likely to acquire news from the platform than those of TikTok.
