Cisco acquires Observable Networks with an eye on Behavior Modeling

Cisco has announced the acquisition of Observable Networks, a forensic cloud service provider. Based in St. Louis, Observable networks is a privately held company that delivers forensic tools as a service through its cloud. Its technology is based on behavior modeling of devices on a network and is used by analysts to find anomalies and external threats in a closed network.

“The ability to dramatically improve visibility, security and response capabilities across an entire IT surface, including highly distributed branch environments and public cloud infrastructures, is becoming increasingly important as companies and organizations continue their digital transformation. With this in mind, I am pleased to announce Cisco’s intent to acquire Observable Networks, a privately held software company headquartered in St. Louis. Observable Networks provides cloud-native network forensics security applications delivered as a service,” said Rob Salvago, Vice President Corporate Business Development at Cisco.

Cisco has been very clever in its acquisitions and partnerships, carefully pivoting a course that leaves a large footprint across the cloud services business and now, with this acquisition, networking too. It plans to use Observable Networks to build out its Stealthwatch platform in the cloud.

Observable Networks pioneered in behavior modeling of Networks allowing analysts to gain real-time situational awareness of all users, devices and traffic on the network, whether in the data center or the cloud. This makes Stealthwatch, which provides visibility and threat detection across the network and data center, applicable to the cloud as well with better analytical power.

Together, the two companies plan to extend Stealthwatch solution into the cloud with highly scalable behavior analytics and comprehensive visibility. The acquisition supports Cisco’s strategic transition toward software-centric solutions.
