TikTok is expanding its STEM stream across Europe, starting in the UK and Ireland, as it faces scrutiny in the US and the UK, following its launch in the US last year.
TikTok is demonstrating its dedication to promoting educational content on its app as it continues to come under increasing scrutiny in the U.S. and the U.K. The firm first launched its dedicated STEM stream in the United States last year, and it said on Tuesday that it is spreading it across Europe, starting in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
For users under the age of 18, the STEM feed will start to appear automatically alongside the "For You" and "Following" feeds. The STEM feed can be enabled by users over the age of 18 using the "content preferences" settings of the app. The feed features subtitles that automatically translate for English-language material.
TikTok's STEM feed has seen a 24% increase in US content since its inception, with 33% of users enabled and a third of teenagers visiting it weekly. Over the past three years, the app has posted nearly 15 million STEM-related videos worldwide.
The business is working with Poynter and Common Sense Networks to evaluate all of the content that appears on the STEM feed. Poynter will evaluate the information's credibility, while Common Sense Networks will check the content to make sure it belongs in the STEM feed. Content will not be permitted to appear in the STEM feed if it fails both of these checks.
