Onshore Oil and Gas Ban

Northern Ireland Takes the Lead in Climate Action, Following Global Trend Towards Renewable Energy.

In a landmark announcement today, Economy Minister Conor Murphy revealed his ambitious proposal to enact a ban on onshore oil and gas exploration and production in Northern Ireland. The move, aimed at combating climate change and advancing towards a sustainable future, marks a significant shift in the region's energy strategy.

Minister Murphy emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, labeling it as one of the foremost challenges of our era. With a steadfast commitment to reducing carbon emissions and achieving net zero targets, the Minister outlined his vision to transition from petroleum to renewable energy sources.

"As climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time, one of the key objectives of my Economic Vision is to reduce carbon emissions," stated Minister Murphy. "To meet our net zero targets, a priority will be to move away from petroleum to renewables."

The proposal encompasses a comprehensive ban on all forms of onshore petroleum exploration and production, including the controversial practice of fracking. Minister Murphy underscored the importance of this ban not only in fostering a shift towards renewables but also in fostering a greener economy and promoting a more sustainable way of life.

With plans to seek approval from Executive colleagues, Minister Murphy outlined the legislative process required to enact the ban, aiming for its introduction to the Assembly in 2025. In the interim, the Department for the Economy will halt the acceptance and processing of onshore petroleum licensing applications.
