With the launch of eBay Authenticate, eBay is all set to go after high-end luxury goods. The new program will allow sellers to verify if their goods are authentic or not. eBay Authenticate will initially focus on luxury handbags and wallets.
Top-end brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes, Gucci, Prada, Burberry, Dior, Fendi, Balenciaga, Goyard, Celine, and Valentino are said to be part of the program. Considering that handbags are always on the top list on eBay’s site, where one is sold every 13 seconds in the US, eBay has made a smart move to make handbags and wallets a priority.
eBay had, in fact, announced that it would be launching an authentic verification program by the end of this year. It had said that more and more people are turning towards online shopping sites to buy luxury pre-owned items, but are often hesitant to do so because of the potential for forgeries and fake ones.
It should be noted that this option is completely optional for sellers. The service will allow sellers to list luxury handbags and wallets valued at over $500 and then receive 80 percent of the final selling price. With eBay Authentic, eBay is surely taking on a number of other e-commerce sites like TheRealReal, ThredUp, and others.
