Market Park San Jose is celebrating its success story as ithostsmany new stores opening near the BART station. Built during the COVID pandemic, Market Park San Jose has become a retail magnet. Some of the famous merchants to open stores at the newly constructed market include Safeway, CVS Pharmacy, Carbon Health and Chase Bank.
A spokesperson for Pleasanton-based Safeway confirmed that Safeway is opening its new store near the Berryessa Road and Sierra Road corner in San Jose on April 28. Market Park San Jose is part of a 120-acre mixed-use development including stores, restaurants, offices, homes, and parks.
“The retail center is all part of our strategy to create a complete transit-oriented neighborhood and job center at San Jose’s new Berryessa BART Station, with jobs, housing, shopping, parks, creek trails, and good transit,” said Erik Schoennauer, a land-use consultancy partner.
The newly developed areacurrently houses around 1,000 residences. Also, as many as 4,450 residential units could be built in the project footprint.“There’s a lot of demand for this kind of center in this area. Restaurants, grocery stores, and shops are very limited in this area,” said Ralph Borelli, principal executive with Borelli Investment. The construction of the Safeway store started in February 2020, just weeks before the lockdown was imposed. Market Park is probably the only retail center constructed during 2020 that was anchored by a supermarket and a pharmacy.
