The municipality exposure to wildfires in Ontario was determined to 2050 from artificial intelligence climate data and high-end risk modeling by AISIX Solutions.
AISIX Solutions Inc., an AI-inspired climate data analytics company, has come forward with a landmark analysis identifying the top ten small Ontario municipalities at the most risk towards wildfires. The analysis contrasts the historical wildfire conditions with projections as from the fifth Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP5) climate change scenario for 2050.
“We see increasing probabilities of burns, resulting from climate change, with the seasons for fires being longer on account of increased temperatures and dryer conditions for fuels," said Dr. Gio Roberti, Head of Product at AISIX. Fire risk analytics provided by AISIX offer critical insights on both current fire risk and future trends.
“Understanding your customers is critical for us in mitigating wildfire risk by providing unbiased data. Knowing the areas facing potential danger is the starting point to allow stakeholders to take measures that protect life and property", added Dr. Gio Roberti.
Advanced machine learning and climate projections were employed in the analysis, which indicate the areas at risk in Ontario. The risk analytics tool developed by AISIX uses the Cell2Fire2 model to simulate wildfire behaviors over the province, integrating information about climate change impacts in the past and future.
The top ten municipalities ranked by historical burn probabilities include Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Kirkland Lake, while the municipalities that are witnessing the greatest increases in wildfire probabilities by 2050 are Assiginack, South River, and Huron Shores. These insights will enhance effective preparations and management by stakeholders towards wildfire risk.
