Google, Apple, and Microsoft to implement password-less sign-in on all major platforms

In a joint effort, tech moguls Google, Apple, and Microsoft announced that they have committed to building support for password-less sign-in across all mobile, desktop, and browser platforms they control in the coming year.

This means that password-less authentication will arrive in all major device platforms soon.

Password-only authentication is one of the most significant security problems on the internet. Managing so many passwords is cumbersome for consumers, leading users to reuse the same ones across services.

Using the same password across services can lead to costly errors such as data breaches, account takeovers, and even stolen identities. While legacy forms of two-factor authentication and password managers offer incremental improvements, there hasn’t been an industry-wide collaboration to create sign-in technology that is more convenient and more secure until now.

As Google explained in a blog published on Thursday, a password-less login process will let users choose their phones as the primary authentication device for apps, websites, and other digital services.

Microsoft’s VP for security, compliance, identity, and privacy, Vasu Jakkal, emphasized compatibility across platforms. He said that through passkeys on mobile devices, we could sign in to an app or service on nearly any device, regardless of the platform or browser the device is running.
