China has always aspired to be at the forefront of cutting-edge fields like artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Its current focus is on lifelike robots, which are yet another sci-fi domain.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has announced a proposal for the country to create its first humanoid robots by 2025. More start-ups in the industry will receive help from the government, which will also set industry standards, develop talent, and improve international cooperation.
Following the policy guidelines, the stock of Chinese robotics companies skyrocketed, adding yet another twist to the technical arms race between the two largest economies in the world for processors and hardware. Thus far, US corporations like Boston Dynamics and Tesla Inc. have benefited from a technological advantage.
According to the ministry, China, the top producer of electronics in the world, plans to make significant advancements in motion control, environment sensing, and machine-to-human interaction within the next two years. The government has asked for increased research into the creation of dexterous robot hands, arms, and feet and is supporting the application of artificial intelligence in robotics.
The policy document was ambitious but lacked detail. China also stated that it intends to build a dependable industry supply chain system to facilitate the manufacturing of humanoid robots, with the goal of having these machines think, learn, and invent by 2027.
A 10% daily limit was reached in the shares of Miracle Automation Engineering Co. and Ningbo Zhongda Leader Intelligent Transmission Co.; advances were also made by Siasun Robot & Automation Co. and Shenzhen Sunwin Intelligent Co.
