Qualcomm India’s president plans to design semiconductors in India, leveraging skilled engineers. The US multinational chip company produces Snapdragon processors for Android devices.
In an exclusive interview, Qualcomm India’s president said that the company is already designing semiconductors in India in order to take advantage of the skilled engineers in the nation. The multinational chip company in the United States develops wireless telephony and semiconductors. The Snapdragon processors that Qualcomm produces are mostly known for powering some of the greatest Android devices available worldwide. Similar to other chip designers, Qualcomm does not produce its own chips. Rather, it depends on chip producers like GlobalFoundries, Samsung Electronics, and TSMC.
According to a report from the Semiconductor Industry Association, the process of designing a chip is “extremely complex,” involving years of R&D, hundreds of millions of dollars of investment, and thousands of engineers. Chip design, a crucial step in the semiconductor manufacturing process, establishes the specifications for the chip’s architecture, system, and layout of individual circuits.
The investment of 1.77 billion rupees ($21.3 million) would also help Qualcomm fulfill its pledge to uphold the government of India’s “Make in India” and “Design in India” policies. With the approval of three semiconductor facilities in Gujarat and Assam, with investments totaling over $15 billion, the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has significantly advanced India’s objectives in the semiconductor industry.
