On Tuesday, Google announced that it would remove the need to enter a password by promoting the use of a passkey instead. The passkey function debuted last year.
Google stated on Tuesday that it wants to eliminate the need for password entry by promoting the use of its "passkey" function, which debuted earlier this year. According to the company's press statement; it will keep urging businesses to switch to passkeys, which would eventually render passwords rare and unnecessary.
Users unlock a device with a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN when using passkeys, which the business claims is "40% faster than passwords." Google underlined that passkeys use unique cryptography to assure their security and are phishing-resistant.
Even so, the corporation understands that passkeys won't become the default setting right away because technological advances take time to gain widespread use. According to the announcement, conventional passwords "may be around for a little while," so users will still have the choice to use a password to sign in if they so choose. By turning off the "Skip password when possible" function in their settings, users can also choose not to use passkeys.
Passkey options for consumers have previously been deployed by other tech behemoths like Uber and eBay. With the release of iOS 16, Apple also started providing passkeys, allowing users to do away with traditional passwords in favor of passkeys across apps and connected accounts on iCloud.
