Apple’s iOS 17 introduces features for the cognitively disabled

Apple’s new software update focuses on mental and physical health, with extra inclusivity for people with cognitive disabilities.

As part of Apple’s new iOS 17, reports suggest that the updates on the new software are going to offer mental health features as well as more accessibility to disabled individuals. The new software aims to help people of varied ages use Apple’s products with ease and feel included.

Apple’s popular customizable interface, Assistive Access, is getting a makeover, with accessibility focused around cognitive disabilities. The software that will be made available this fall, will include a new ‘Live Speech’ option that will allow non-speaking users to have the option to type out a text and have it spoken out. It will be made available in person, on the phone, and even on FaceTime.

Furthermore, users with the risk of speech loss will have ‘Personal Voice’, an option that will help create a voice of their choice, and the ‘Point and Speak’ feature allows those with vision impairments to read a text by pointing at physical objects.

According to Apple, the Health app will have a variety of new additions in the software update that focuses on one’s mental health. Users will be able to enter their moods and momentary emotions on a daily basis; they will have the ability to see what contributes to their state of mind. The update will include assessments that are easily available to check depression or anxiety levels.

Apple has taken inclusivity and accessibility a step further, with people eagerly awaiting the new software later this year.
