Google has started rolling out an update for the Gmail app for android users which integrates Google Meet within the Gmail app. Earlier Google had announced that it is planning to integrate Meet with Gmail by default for all the Gmail users across all platforms. With this integration, Android users can join a meeting directly from the invitation link on Gmail. Google is working to make Gmail a centralized app including all the chat and video conferencing features. Meet app for Web version is already available for all the users, while iOS users will also get this integration soon.
The update is server-side and will take a few days to reflect on every user's account. Once the update arrives, users will be able to see a meet tab at the bottom of the app. The feature allows users to create or join a meeting. The Gmail app also integrates Google Calendar for scheduling a meeting with Google Meet. The integration allows users to attend the call right from the Gmail app on Android without leaving the app.
Google also gives users the control to show or hide this feature in their Gmail app. For users who don’t want this feature can turn it off by deselecting the “Show the Meet tab for video calling” in the Meet Tab. Although the Meet tab will not appear for G-Suite users of Education accounts as they are not allowed to create video meetings on Meet. Alternatively, they can use the standalone Meet app. The update is rolling out to all personal accounts as well as G-Suite customers.
