Snapchat has finally launched its TikTok competitor called Spotlight. The company is also offering a paid sum to the creators whose videos get popular. For attracting initial users, Snapchat has introduced prize money of $1 million, which will be divided among the creators whose videos get viral.
"We designed Spotlight to entertain our community while living up to Snapchat values, with our community's well being as a top priority," said a statement from Snapchat’s parent firm Snap Inc., announcing the new service. Spotlight is being launched in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, and other markets later. The Spotlight tab will be present in the Snapchat app and only for the users in the countries listed above.
Spotlight replicates the TikTok style videos, which are mostly vertical and short format, can be a plain new video, or you may find people lipsyncing or dancing to their favorite tunes. Lately, DIY and other short creative tips and tricks videos have also been gaining popularity. The original idea behind this format goes to TikTok, which is under pressure from the US to collaborate with US companies to provide service there.
Spotlight has been hinted at for months now, with the announcement of music in snaps back in August. Now the Spotlight section will allow the proper feed for the short video format. The users can post their videos marking their location. The videos also appear in the Snap map apart from the regular feed, making the discovery even easier.
