Tomcat 11.0 was released by The Apache Software Foundation today, 25 years after its initial commit, with beefed up virtual thread support and better integration of TLS for developers.
Apache Tomcat 11.0, the 25th anniversary of the first commit of its source code to the Apache Tomcat project repository, has now been released by the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). To create Java based Web Apps, Jakarta EE specifications are implemented on Apache Tomcat, a Java application server that offers a strong base for developers building their Java based web apps.
A recent JetBrains survey suggests that roughly 60% of the developers utilize Tomcat as their preferred application server; this is because of its ability to start up really fast and is relatively lightweight. It is versatile, with a stable APIs that ease upgrades and yet works efficiently in those environments.
As the Tomcat project demonstrates, the ASF also has a Community over Code spirit, said Mark Thomas, a member of the Tomcat Project Management Committee (PMC), 'The Tomcat project illustrates the ASF’s Community over Code spirit, fostering a healthy environment for open source software development.'
Tomcat was originally developed by Sun Microsystems, and was donated to the ASF in 1999, with its first commit 25 years ago. This is the ninth major release since its initial adoption as an ASF project and coincides with release of new function specifications.
Virtual threads support, automatic reloads of TLS keys with zero downtime and integration with OpenSSL via Java’s FFM API are the key features of Tomcat 11.0 that increase reliability. The new version will also run for the next ten, as they support. The bug fixes will be addressed in monthly release cycles to keep the performance reliability going.
