Microsoft is looking to bring Android app support to Windows in 2021. The project has been named “Latte” and will use Windows Subsystem for Linux as a compatibility layer. Using the Windows Subsystem, Microsoft is also planning to use the Android subsystem to enable native support for Android apps.
Windows Subsystem for Linux is required for running Linux binary executable files natively on Windows 10. Microsoft has also enabled support for a real Linux kernel in Windows 10 to facilitate an advanced Linux experience, including Android.
Android app support for Windows 10 is coming in the second half of 2021 as part of the major Windows 10 21H2 upgrade. It will allow developers to convert their Android apps into MSIX format, which is a Windows-only package format. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code allows developers to make their own versions of Android or use it as the basis for their own services or platforms.
Using this, Microsoft is planning to allow developers to convert the app’s bytecode into native apps for Windows 10.Developers can convert their Android apps and submit them as converted MSIX package in Microsoft Store. The apps will also lack support for Google Play services. Without Google play services, some apps may not work properly, but we can expect Microsoft to launch their own version of app services.
However, apps sideloaded by users manually might not work correctly as Microsoft is using a compatibility layer, and developers will have to recompile their apps using a ‘software solution’ offered by the tech giant.
