SpaceX launches satellite with Indonesia to improve internet connectivity

On June 18, SpaceX carried out a flawless rocket landing at sea to cap off the launch of a new communications satellite for Indonesia into orbit from Florida.

After a 15-minute delay due to strong winds, a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the SATRIA-1 communications satellite launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 6:21 p.m. EDT.

Shortly after launch, the first stage booster of the Falcon 9 came back to Earth and made a vertical landing on the SpaceX droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas, which was positioned in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida.

The Indonesian firm PSN will run SATRIA-1 (short for "Satellite of the Republic of Indonesia") for the Indonesian government.

The $550 million spacecraft, which will provide free internet access to 150,000 public facilities like schools, regional government offices, and health facilities, is intended to increase connectivity and inclusion in the nation, according to The Jakarta Post.

Though only a small portion of Indonesia's 280 million people, or about two-thirds, have access to the internet, connectivity is poor in the country's remote, underdeveloped eastern islands.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the 4.5-ton Satellite of the Republic of Indonesia (SATRIA-1) into orbit from Florida before landing precisely at an offshore location. The satellite was made by Thales Alenia Space.

The satellite will be located in orbit above the eastern Papua region of Indonesia. According to the Indonesian government, it will offer internet access to 50,000 public service points and have a throughput capacity of 150 gigabytes per second.

The government and PT Satelit Nusantara Tiga, a satellite service provider in Indonesia, are working together on the project in a public-private partnership.
