T-Mobile and Comcast come together to curb robocalls

T-Mobile and Comcast have announced a partnership which will see them work together to mitigate the menace of robocalls. The announcement is a welcome development and a great step towards delivering consumer protection against robocalls and spam.

To deliver this, the telecom giants have launched cross-network robocalling protection which is built on STIR/SHAKEN standards. The technology will allow T-Mobile customers to identify authentic calls across the company’s network. The feature will come for Comcast Xfinity Voice home phone service customers later this year.

According to a report released by Hiya, a spam monitoring service, Americans received 26.3 billion robocalls last year. The STIR/SHAKEN standards are bound to give much-needed relief to the customers of both telecom conglomerates as they will be able to screen calls generated by scammers.

T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere commenting on the announcement said: “Robocalls and spam calls are an industry-wide problem, and we’ve got to join forces to keep consumers protected. Today, we’re the first to cross industry lines to do just that.”

The technology is live for ten smartphones which include: LG G8 ThinQ, Samsung Galaxy Note8, Note9, Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+. It will come to the new Samsung Fold and Samsung GalaxyA6 soon. T-Mobile in its press release said that its customers with these devices will see “Caller Verified” on their screen when they get authentic calls from the T-Mobile network and Comcast Xfinity Voice home phone service.
