Vietnam accelerates transition to modern telecommunications, with plans to shut down 2G networks by September 2024 and 3G by 2028.
Vietnam will shut down its 2G network by September 2024, which would affect above 10 million users who still rely on outdated technology. A detailed plan has been outlined by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) to phase out 2G network, encouraging users to buy new devices before September 16, 2024.
At present, Viettel holds approximate 7.44 milion 2G users, along with Vinaphone (1.3 million), MobiFone (1 million), Vietnamobile, and virtual network operators (MVNOs) with about 500,000. With a target to cut off 2.2 million by the end of September, Viettel plans to drastically reduce 2G user base. MobiFone anticipating around 700,000 remaining 2G users in remote areas, MobiFone and Vinaphone are also working towards the transition.
The Vietnam Telecommunications Authority has highlighted that the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequency bands will not be reallocated until operators submit plans to stop 2G services completely.
In the future, Viettal will pave way for modern technologies by phasing out 3G networks by September 2028. As the company shut down its 3G services, VinaPhone and MobiFone will follow suit in areas with minimal 3G usage.
This move marks a major step in Vietnam's effort towards modernizing its telecommunications infrastructure and adopting new technologies.
