 thirteen restaurants in Toronto

The Michelin guide published the first Canadian edition, awarding coveted stars to 13 restaurants in Toronto.

Michelin nod is received by some 74 restaurants across 27 types of cuisine in the largest city in the country.  The selection got mixed reactions. The number of restaurants was praised but there was also criticism for the lack of diversity among winners. The next Canadian city to feature in the Michelin guide will be Vancouver.

On Tuesday, around 350 people attended the announcement in-person. In May, the guide’s arrival in Toronto was first announced by the mayor of the city, the federal minister of tourism of Canada, and Michelin. It was celebrated as an exciting opportunity that will boost exposure for the city, marking it one of a global destination for travel and food. Most of the stars awarded restaurants are located in Toronto’s city center and they feature tasting menus.

Among the one-star winners are Don Alfonso 1890, which was once named the best Italian restaurant outside of Italy, and Alo, a modern French restaurant, which has been consistently ranked among the best restaurants in the world.
