President Joe Biden honored Americans for their contributions to American Culture with National Medals of Arts and Humanities awards to Eva Longoria and Steven Spielberg.
Distinguished arts and Humanities honorees to be recognized with National Medals of Arts and Humanities by President Joe Biden include Eva Longoria, Steven Spielberg and Spike Lee, Aaron Sorkin, Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott. They have done a lot in their fields.
The National Medal of Arts, the nation's highest recognition for artistry, is presented to living artists whose lifetime work has been repeatedly acclaimed by critics as significant and deserving of wider public knowledge and respect. Distinguished achievements but, say the White House, these honorees have inspired others.
As one of the key Arts and Humanities observances, the month of October is proclaimed as the National Arts and Humanities Month; during this month the administration stated how essential these two sectors are to the people. “Whether it is a work of art or an academic endeavor, our artists and scholars are the very essence of America: the artist is imbued with a sense of vision of creation and connectivity,” read the proclamation.
Honorees in the past have included Ruth Asawa (posthumously), photographer Randy A. Batista, and the Country Humanities Hall of Fame and Museum. For 2023 honorees were Mark Bradford, Ken Burns, and late Selena Quintanilla.
Like the National Medal of Arts which honored the late chef Anthony Bourdain and contributed to the recognition of humanities, the National Humanities Medal has also featured such author and botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer.
This event focuses onto the contributions of Arts and Humanities in the enhancement of American culture and society and appreciation of their contributors.
