New THC Regulations Reshape Louisiana’s Hemp Industry Starting January 2025
In 2025, Louisiana's hemp industry will undergo significant changes with the implementation of new laws that will impact THC and CBD products. These changes, which take effect on January 1, 2025, aim to regulate the rapidly growing $33 million industry more effectively, focusing on THC-infused seltzers, gummies, and other consumable products.
Under the new law, the serving sizes of THC-infused consumables, such as gummies, seltzers, and tinctures, will be reduced from 8 mg to 5 mg per serving. This will affect popular products like Crescent 9 seltzers, which already have lower THC levels. Additionally, THC beverages will be limited to four cans per pack, each counting as one serving.
For other THC edibles that aren't single-serve, clear portion guidelines will be required, with tinctures needing droppers for precise measurements. The total THC content in packaged products will also be capped at 40 mg.
The new laws will restrict sales locations, prohibiting gas stations and connected convenience stores from selling THC products. Bars and restaurants will also be banned from selling THC, unless they obtained a state permit before June 2024. Moreover, the minimum age for purchasing THC products will rise from 18 to 21.
Flower hemp products will also be banned, continuing Louisiana's ban on THC vapes. These changes, part of Act 752, aim to improve consumer safety and regulate Louisiana's booming hemp market more effectively.
