Dangerous heat wave causes deaths, breaks records as temperatures increases across the country.
A burning heat wave has trapped the United States that have lost lives and breaking temperature records in the West and now threatening the East Coast with triple-digit heat temperatures. With a starting high of 53.3°C, where a motorcyclist lost his life due to heat and another hospitalized.
The National Weather Service issued excessive heat warnings affecting approximately 36 million people, advising them to take precautionary measures against the harmful heat. The seriousness of the crisis showcased when Las Vegas, Nevada, set a new record high temperature of 120°F (48.8°C).
In Oregon, temperature records were broken, including the one in Salem where the temperatures reached 39.4°C. While there was not declared heat wave, temperature above 100 degrees was common on the more humid East Coast.
Emergency services have been strained this week; Death Valley experienced temperatures that could exceed records of 54.4°C. Authorities have cautioned against outdoor activities during the peak heat hours of the day and emphasized the risk of heart- related illnesses, which can worsen quickly.
As the heat wave lasts, meteorologists are warning of continued high temperatures in the region around Lake Tahoe, and of high temperatures throughout the West. The authorities monitor for any new heat-related incidents, as the situation is still fluid.
