The latest addition to Google Labs allows the user to add a level of customization to news feeds, such that one can choose top stories and Google News sources of preference.
At Google Labs, a new personalization tool is introduced whereby a user can always give preference to his or her desired sources of news in the Top Stories and the search recoveries. The new experiment is referred to as Preferred Sources and its essence was announced in a blog post polled Thursday as one of the ways Google considers making the search more indicative of personal preferences.
After enabling it, users may choose preferred outlets: some of them are international publications, or small local sources, or fan blogs or videos. These choices affect what they see on their Google News feed and Top Stories section without entirely excluding all alternate sources. Google has focused on showing that every source of news will be clearly marked so as to remain transparent and diverse.
The update allows people to subscribe to local TV stations, highly specialized websites, or well-known, trusted political and sports journalists. Such categories as "Top Stories" and "From Your Sources" make stories easier to navigate in the pre-selected topics.
Available by opt-in means as an experiment through Google Labs at present, the company suggests the imminent expansion of the feature. Google has also made it clear that the ones that are not updated regularly may not come in the feed.
With such a high contact option, Google strives to enhance the control and relevance of news content to the user within its news ecosystem.
