 Elon Musk expects Neuralink

Elon Musk said he expects a wireless brain chip developed by his firm Neuralink to begin human clinical trials in six months after the firm missed his earlier timelines.

Neuralink is developing brain chip interfaces that it says could enable disabled patients to move and communicate again, with Musk adding that the firm will also target restoring vision.

Based in Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area, Neuralink has in recent years been conducting tests on animals as it seeks approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to start clinical trials in people.

During a much-awaited public update on the device, Musk said they wanted to be extremely careful and certain that the technology would work well before putting a device into a human.

The first two human applications targeted by the Neuaralink device will be in enabling the movement of muscles in people who cannot do so and restoring vision, Musk said. He added that even if someone had never had vision, ever, like they were born blind, the firm believed they can still restore vision.
