Premium Choice Broadband upgrades it network with IP Infusion’s open-networking solutions to improve performance, scalability and flexibility of rural Maine communities.
IP Infusion has reported that Maine based fiber services provider Premium Choice Broadband has upgraded its core networking infrastructure opting away from Cisco routers and into IP Infusion’s open networking software and hardware solutions. This change in strategy seeks to improve service delivery and network capabilities of the company having a look to the future.
Organized in the year 2007, Premium Choice Broadband offers high speed internet to people of rural Maine, which are more than 7000 square miles. The company with its fiber-to-the-home, DSL, cable and wireless services setup has also spent $ 2 million more in its infrastructure to provide up to 1 Gbps speeds to over 5,000 households and business centers.
The upgrade includes the implementation of IP Infusion’s OcNOS-SP-IPBASE-2400, a service provider networking product, on open networking hardware, UfiSpace S9600-72XC routers, which is tailored for advanced networking and broadband applications. The high performance routers provide up to 2.4 Tbps of switching capacity so that the company can scale its services well.
After the upgrade of the initial deployment has been successful, Premium Choice will upgrade the initial periphery to a fiber ring around Maine, including 400G ports and the expansion of their network capacity. The change to open networking gives the company more flexibility and savings, since the upgrades of the future will mean new software rather than expensive hardware as before.
“This strategy towards disaggregating networks allows us to upgrade where necessary without vendor restrictions,” said Andy Breda, Network Manager for Premium Choice Broadband. With this novel step, the growing significance of open networking in the industry is also evident.
