The e-learning project in Pune lost momentum because of internet connection problems which produced unused facilities alongside wasted investment dollars.
The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) substantial investment in their e-learning project now stands idle because of persistent internet connectivity problems. The 2017 launched digital learning project aimed at municipal schools failed to use newly installed studios and equipment after its commencement.
The ₹20.99 crore investment from PMC was used to establish e-learning facilities throughout 265 schools followed by an expansion to another 147 schools. Through its innovative components the project served educational resources from one hundred thousand students most of whom belonged to underprivileged communities. The online educational system which obtained disruptions during COVID-19 lockdowns continues to operate as a non-functional program because authorities state they lack internet connectivity.
The PMC does not incorporate free Internet services from Reliance Jio into its existing e-learning platform. Barely put into operation by BSNL the system collapsed because of initial support failure. Many people in the community feel that investment into this digital program became useless because of poor administrative oversight.
The public expresses anger towards PMC because of its inability to support its e-learning program at a time when India participates in the Digital India campaign. The program faces revitalization discussions as authorities expect the system will launch during the next academic year. The online learning initiative remains in doubt since officials have yet to find a definitive solution to address the internet accessibility problems.
