Some of Instagram’s most popular accounts are facing a certain “issue.” Apparently, millions of followers on these popular accounts are just dropping. A cybersecurity bug? Or is someone hacking into Instagram? Many popular internet personalities like James Charles and Zach Clayton, who have millions of followers have tweeted their drop in followers.
Whatever the cause, Instagram is working to solve it. The popular networking site posted on Twitter saying, “We’re aware of an issue that is causing a change in account follower numbers for some people right now. We’re working to resolve this as quickly as possible.” Apart from Charles and Clayton, accounts of top celebrities Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez also witnessed a drop in followers.
Accounted?
The reason for this remains unclear yet. Supposedly, Instagram was working on removing millions of accounts that had fake followers or accounts that were inauthentic. But Instagram hasn’t assured us if that’s the reason. Generally, Instagram does a regular “sweep” of the entire platform and their user bases, so that, spam or inactive accounts can be removed.
Back in November, Instagram had announced in a blog post that it will “begin removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity. With this sweeping, Instagram might have accidentally affected the follower counts. Unless there really is a bug or an attack on these popular accounts. Let’s hope for the first reason!
