Google to buy HTC's smartphone team for $1.1 billion

Google is making moves to buy people responsible for making smart hardware. The search engine giant has confirmed that it plans to buy HTC’s mobile division team for $1.1 billion. From the looks of it, Google is making a long-term investment in its own hardware.

Google’s head of Hardware, Rick Osterloh said in a blog post, “These future fellow Googlers are amazing folks we’ve already been working with closely on the Pixel smartphone line, and we're excited to see what we can do together as one team.”

In addition, the $1.1 billion deal also includes a non-exclusive license for HTC’s intellectual property. Looking at Google’s streak for making big purchases, this is the second time. Nearly 6 years ago, Google announced a $12.5 billion buyout of Motorola Mobility.

But this doesn’t mean that HTC will stop its smartphone business. The company will continue onward, even if it will be sending off a good portion of its best talents over to Google. The CEO of HTC, Cher Wang said, “This agreement will ensure innovation within our HTC Smartphone and Vive virtual reality business.” The point is clearly emphasized with HTC’s announcement that it is already actively preparing for its next flagship smartphone.
