Elon Musk’s Boring Company gets approval for building an underground transportation system in Las Vegas.
Elon Musk’s Boring Company received the initial approval required to build a transportation system to shuttle passengers in Tesla vehicles via a network of tunnels under Las Vegas. Nicknamed the ‘Vegas Loop,’ the transportation system will allow passengers to ride Tesla cars to and from places like the hotel-casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, the Las Vegas Convention Center, the city’s new football stadium, and McCarran International Airport.
The Boring Company already operates a smaller version of this transportation system called the ‘Teslas in Tunnels’ underneath the Las Vegas Convention Center. The ‘Teslas in Tunnels’ opened earlier this year with two operational 0.8-mile tunnels. The Boring Company proposed an enormous city-wide expansion in December 2020 that mostly aligns with the plan approved by the Clark County officials. The approved transportation system involves 51 stations along 29 miles of tunnels. Clark County expects as many as 57,000 passengers to travel using the system per hour. The county officials also said that no taxpayer money will be spent to build it.
The Boring Company earlier stated that it would incur the costs for building the main tunnels but planned to ask hotel casinos or other businesses which want a station to pay for those construction costs.
