After over 20 years of multiple concept cars teasing its return, Volkswagen finally reveals the modern rendition of its iconic Microbus. The new VW Microbus is back in real—a production-ready form with the electric VW ID Buzz and its work-horse ID Buzz Cargo sibling.
The VW ID Buzz will arrive in Europe this year as the standard-wheelbase model, while the ID Buzz will be coming to North America as a longer-wheelbase version and will debut in 2023 and go on sale in 2024.
The ID Buzz will play a crucial role as VW continues to transform into EV leader. The VW ID Buzz will showcase the automaker’s MEB modular electric architecture, and it will be among the first electric vans explicitly marketed for families.
The production version of the van has been slightly updated from the 2017 concept version—the grille is slightly different, with large air vents, an overall boxier shape, sharper angles, and a taller road stance.
VW is staying true to the original version of the Microbus with the two-tone paint scheme it is offering; the automaker is offering the ID Buzz in 11 color variants.
The European variant of the VW ID Buzz features a battery pack with 81kWh of energy capacity, 77kWh of which is available for the driver. The electric motor can churn out 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. VW is electronically limiting the ID Buzz’s top speed to 90mph (145 km/h).
