Howard County sets precedence for environmental sustainability

As Earth day approaches, Youth Climate Institute prepares to showcase their all year round goal towards environmental protection.

Howard County high school has collection of students who are determined to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship, their dedication has been what built the Youth Climate Institute (YCI) in Baltimore, USA.

With Earth Day just around the corner, YCI students are not waiting for a specific day to help protect the earth. Maia Boswell, YCI’s Certified Ambassador says "We want to make sure that the world that we are building today is one that can continue to be used and won't end in disaster."

YCI introduces students to environmental topics like environmental justice, climate science, sustainability and much more. Their focus is to introduce students to the importance of protecting the environment, so they can become stewards of the future. The Howard County Conservancy gives students the opportunity to have real world knowledge over their 200 acres of natural surroundings.

The program focuses on the legislative aspects of environmental protection, highlighting the importance of preserving clean water, food and air for the next generations to come. Students in the program are given opportunities to develop innovative projects, like remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) for underwater research and water quality assessments among many others. On completion of the three-year program, students officially become certified climate ambassadors.
