Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad leads engagement sessions with stakeholders to develop comprehensive strategy addressing plastic pollution.
In a proactive move towards environmental sustainability, Malaysia's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is spearheading negotiations to devise a national policy on plastic production, usage, and waste management. This initiative aligns with the objectives outlined in the Global Plastic Treaty (GPT) of 2022, aimed at curbing the escalating crisis of plastic pollution on a global scale.
Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the Minister of NRES, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in formulating an effective strategy by engaging stakeholders from diverse sectors. These include ministries, government agencies, industries, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Through the National Negotiation Committee, NRES has conducted extensive engagement sessions to gather insights and perspectives to shape Malaysia's stance on the GPT.
"We are committed to inclusively involving civil society in shaping our position on the Global Plastic Treaty," stated Minister Nik Nazmi in a recent statement issued by NRES. He highlighted the necessity of transitioning towards sustainable practices to mitigate plastic consumption while ensuring equitable outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
Malaysia has actively participated in international negotiations concerning the GPT, contributing to discussions at the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC) level. These deliberations aim to formulate a binding international agreement to combat plastic pollution, particularly in marine environments.
